Man attacked while trying to help stop suspected thief, Overland Park police say

Overland Park police seek the public’s help in identifying two people who allegedly attacked a man who tried to help a loss prevention officer detain a woman suspected of stealing items from a store.

The theft and assault occurred May 9 at a store in the 9600 block of Metcalf Avenue. According to police, a woman walked into the store, allegedly concealed several items, then tried to walk out of the store without paying for them.

A loss prevention officer confronted the woman and tried to prevent her from leaving. A struggle ensued. Another customer, who police described as a good Samaritan, saw the commotion and tried to help the security guard.

A man driving a Honda Accord pulled up, got out and attacked the man who tried to help the loss prevention officer. The man and the woman suspected of stealing items got into the Honda and drove south on Metcalf Avenue, police said.

No other details were released.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Overland Park Police Department at 913-344-8768 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
