More than $25K raised for family of slain Overland Park officer; police set up fund

Since Officer Mike Mosher was killed in a shootout with a suspect in a hit-and-run Sunday, the Overland Park Police Department has received calls and emails about how the public can financially help his family.

At the request of Mosher’s wife, donations made to the department will be directed to the Overland Park Police Officer’s Foundation, a charitable nonprofit organization, police said Tuesday.

In a news release about a memorial fund created in Mosher’s name, the force’s Fraternal Order of Police, which Mosher served as president of, said it was mourning the loss of a “truly heroic officer.”

“His caring heart, kind soul and and selfless sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the organization wrote. “Our hearts are broken.”

A friend of the Mosher family has also set up a GoFundMe fundraiser online. Donations will go to Mosher’s wife for “any and all family related expenses.” As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 430 people had donated about $29,500.

Mosher and the suspect, Phillip Carney, were killed in the shootout that unfolded after 5:50 p.m. in the 8300 block of West 123rd Street.

Prior to the shooting, Mosher radioed to dispatch about a hit-and-run crash near West 123rd Street and Antioch Road, according to Overland Park police. Mosher approached the suspect’s vehicle and an altercation occurred. The two exchanged gunfire.
