Kansas man accused of leading police on chase and firing at deputy faces federal charge

A Kansas man was charged Monday in federal court after allegedly leading police on a high speed chase and firing at a deputy.

David W. Kellner, 31, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas said in a news release.

On May 1, a deputy with the Miami County Sheriff’s Department attempted to stop a vehicle on K68 Highway near the Louisburg Cider Mill that was driving without its head or taillights on.

When the deputy activated his lights, Kellner fled south on U.S. 69 Highway reaching speeds up to 110 mph, court documents said.

He fired at the deputy, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said, and was caught after running into a fence and fleeing on foot.

Deputies recovered a military-style rifle, more than $5,500 in cash and small amounts of marijuana and methamphetamine.

Kellner was convicted of a felony in 2008 and was prohibited from possession a firearm.

If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
