18-year-old charged in shooting death of man in Independence, prosecutors say

Jackson County prosecutors say surveillance video shows an 18-year-old charged Monday with murder shooting a man outside an Independence apartment complex.

Jason A. Belshe Jr. was charged with first-degree murder, robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.

On April 3, Independence police responded to a shooting in the 300 block of Sundown Drive.

Nikolas Lampton was found dead.

Charging documents allege that Lampton and Belshe met after arranging a trade of marijuana and cash for two firearms over Snapchat.

Surveillance recordings appear to show Lampton raising his hands to surrender and turning to walk away when the first shot was fired, prosecutors said. As he began to run, more shots were fired.

Belshe was identified as the person in the video, prosecutors said.

During an interview with police, Belshe said Lampton tried to take Belshe’s gun so he fired.

Prosecutors have requested a $500,000 bond.
