Three more men charged in February shooting that killed 1, injured 4 in Westport
Three more people have been charged after an early morning shooting in late February left a teenager dead and four others injured in Westport.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday it has charged Lavont A. Carter, 18, and Christien Woody, 20, each with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action in connection to the Feb. 29 shooting that killed 17-year-old Devin Harris and injured others.
Lamon O. Williams, 25, another man who prosecutors charged in mid-March, faces one count of unlawful use of a weapon and one count of armed criminal action in connection to the same incident.
The three men were identified as possible suspects after Kansas City police received witness statements and reviewed surveillance video.
According to charging documents, one witness told police she saw Williams firing shots out of a car after an altercation outside of the Throwback KC nightclub, court records state. Surveillance video allegedly showed Williams entering the car before shots were fired around 1:30 a.m..
He denied involvement in the incident in an interview with police.
Further inspection of the surveillance video allegedly showed Carter and Woody among others firing weapons from an SUV.
A Kansas City, Kansas, detective assigned to an FBI gang task force assisted Kansas City police with identifying Carter and Woody from the surveillance images captured before the shooting took place.
Carter, Woody and Williams, all from Kansas City, Kansas, are the third, fourth and fifth defendants to be charged in connection with the shooting. Their bonds have each been set at $150,000 cash.
No attorney information is listed in online public records for Carter and Woody. An attorney listed for Williams could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday night.
Prosecutors previously filed charges against Devon L. Carter, 25, and Ernest P. Jones Jr., 23, who both face charges of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon for their alleged involvement in the killing.
