Kansas City police officer shot, injured man believed to have a weapon Thursday night
Update: The man, 47-year-old Donnie Sanders, died from his injuries Friday. New story is here.
One man has life-threatening injuries after a Kansas City police officer, who believed the man had a weapon, shot him following an attempted traffic stop Thursday night, police said.
Just after 11:15 p.m. Thursday an officer attempted to stop a vehicle at 51st Street and Prospect Ave. The car eventually came to a stop in an alley between Prospect and Wabash avenues where the driver got out of the car and ran, said Kansas City Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina in an email.
The man then turned toward an officer at 52nd Street and raised his arms “as though he had a weapon,” Becchina said.
The officer told the man to drop the weapon and fired at him when the man did not comply, police said.
The man was brought to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police are asking anyone who saw anything to call the department’s homicide unit at 816-234-5043.
