Man fatally shot outside KCPD’s Central Patrol Station; 3 kids at the scene uninjured
A man was fatally shot outside a Kansas City police station on Friday afternoon, and a homicide investigation is underway, according to police.
Three children who were present at the time of the shooting were not injured.
Police officers at the Kansas City Police Department’s Central Patrol Division heard the gunfire just before 4 p.m., according to Capt. Tim Hernandez, a police spokesman.
Police found the man, later identified as Devon Nolan, 34, stumbling toward the police station at 1200 E. Linwood Blvd., Hernandez told reporters Friday evening. Nolan, who had been shot, collapsed, and officers began rendering aid.
In the station’s parking lot, police heard screams and found three uninjured children inside an SUV, a vehicle police say the shooting victim had exited. The children range in age from 3 to 6 or 7 years old, Hernandez said. Officers were searching around the vehicle, which remained at the scene Friday night.
Nolan was taken to a hospital, where he died.
As of Friday evening, Hernandez said police had taken a person of interest into custody for questioning. The person was located at a nearby home.
Earlier in the day, police said they believed a female suspect shot Nolan and fled the scene, according to Sgt. Jacob Becchina, another Kansas City police spokesman.
Details about what led up to the shooting and suspect information have not yet been released.
Part of Linwood Boulevard remained blocked off in front of the police station on Friday night as the investigation continued. Hernandez said police were gathering surveillance video that may have captured the shooting.
“We’re out here trying to do everything we can to protect the community and be out here for everyone, and to have these type of situations happen in our own backyard, in our parking lot, it’s hard,” Hernandez said. “But we’ll work through the night, trying to piece everything together to figure out what happened, and we’re just thankful that the kids are all OK. It’s a tragic situation, but we’re trying to do everything we can.”
The killing Friday marked the 26th homicide reported in the city this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. By this time last year, there had been 22 homicides, according to statistics provided by the Kansas City Police Department.
