FBI agent shoots person at Midtown Kansas City apartment

Kansas City police are assisting in the investigation of a shooting involving an FBI agent Wednesday near 39th Street and Baltimore Avenue, a police spokesman said.

The shooting was reported before 3 p.m. at the Alcazar apartment building at 3906 Baltimore. The FBI is the lead agency in the investigation, said Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a Kansas City Police Department spokesman.

Daniel Netemeyer, assistant special agent in charge for FBI in Kansas City, said the shooting involved an agent.

“We’re investigating according to the FBI policy,” he said. “The investigation will be conducted by our inspection review out of FBI headquarters in Washington D.C.”

Netemeyer declined to comment on the victim’s condition.

Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith and Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker arrived at the scene as the investigation continued.

Two FBI command posts were set up. Kansas City police and FBI crime scene investigators were collecting evidence and interviewing possible witnesses.

Draque Drako, who owns a barber shop across the street from the Alcazar apartment building where the shooting took place, said he saw a couple of officers enter the building. After a period of “dead silence on the streets,” he heard gunshots.

“Then all of a sudden, 30 police just started swarming from everywhere,” Drako said.

Drako said the building’s tenants have been known to cause problems including fights and drug sales.

“I feel like this is just another incident that dictates what specifically this Alcazar building, how it’s bringing down the neighborhood,” he said. “I feel like this is really one of the epicenters of a lot of the crime that takes place and it’s definitely not helping my business.”
