2 killed in hit-and-run crash at 18th and Brooklyn in Kansas City; suspect in custody

Two people were killed in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday morning near 18th Street and Brooklyn Avenue in Kansas City, police said.

The crash was reported about 9 a.m. when a maroon Honda Pilot, traveling eastbound on 18th Street at high speed, blew a stop sign and struck a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo heading northbound, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

The force of the crash sent the Chevrolet into a gray Ford Fusion at the intersection.

Two people who were inside the Chevrolet died at the scene. They have not been identified publicly, but both appeared to be in their 50s or 60s, according to Sgt. Deb Randol with the police department’s crash investigations unit.

The crash site was a four-way stop intersection, so drivers would not anticipate others to travel at high speeds there, Randol said.

A patrol sergeant was nearby and saw the suspect get out of the Honda and take off running northbound, Randol said. The sergeant chased the suspect and took him into custody, police said.

The suspect was moved to a hospital after complaining of minor injuries, police said.

The driver of the Ford was not injured.

Police determined the Honda was reported stolen out of Independence, according to Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a police spokesperson.
