Man allegedly wielding a hatchet, making threats on phone disarmed by Belton police
A man allegedly wielding a hatchet and making threats over the phone was disarmed by Belton police using less lethal ammunition overnight Wednesday, police said.
Officers found the man after responding about 11:30 p.m. to the 1200 block of Toulouse Street on reports of an agitated man armed with a hatchet, according a press release posted on the Belton Police Department’s Facebook page.
The man was walking in the street and when officers attempted to speak with him, he didn’t respond. Because there was no one else present, officers followed the man and continued to try to speak with him, police said.
“While the man would not engage in any conversation with officers, they did hear him threatening to harm someone he was on the phone with or the officers if they approached,” police said.
When the man neared Missouri 58 and Bell-Ray Place about 1.2 miles away, officers fired several rounds of less lethal ammunition, disarming him.
Police took the man into custody and he was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
