One person shot and killed outside apartments near downtown Overland Park

Overland Park police were investigating a fatal shooting outside an apartment complex near the downtown area Saturday night.

Police received a call about 7:30 p.m. reporting gunfire outside the 79 Metcalf Apartment Homes in the 7800 block of Marty Street, according to Officer John Lacy, an Overland Park Police Department spokesman.

Arriving officers found an injured male victim thought to be a teenager or a young adult, Lacy said. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he later died. As of late Saturday, police had not been able to identify him.

At least one witness told police she heard what sounded like arguing and then a gunshot. The witness said she looked out the window and saw one person fleeing the area.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, Lacy said.

Police were canvassing the area and looking to speak with witnesses. Prairie Village and Merriam police departments assisted at the scene.

No arrests have been announced.

The killing is the second homicide reported in Overland Park this year, according to data kept by The Star.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Overland Park Police Department at 913-895-6300.
