Drunk driver strikes Kansas City, Kansas, patrol car, injures officer, police say

A drunk driver slammed into a Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department patrol vehicle injuring an officer early Saturday morning, the department says.

Just before 3 a.m. the officer was completing reports in the 700 block of Interstate 70 after working an accident when another car crashed into the driver’s side door of the police car according to social media posts from the department.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority responded to the scene to handle that driver, who police said was intoxicated, according to Kansas City, Kansas, police spokeswoman Abigail Fithian.

The officer was brought to a hospital with minor injuries.

“We are grateful she was able to walk away from this crash,” the department’s Instagram post said.

Fithian said she did not know the condition of the driver or whether they were arrested or charged Saturday morning.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority did not immediately respond to The Star’s request for information.
