6 teens and 3 adults injured in Center school bus wreck on I-470 in Lee’s Summit
Six teenagers and three adults on a school bus from the Center School District were injured in a wreck Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 470 in Lee’s Summit, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The bus was taking students to a wrestling match when another vehicle, a 2008 Ford, merged in front of the bus and traffic stopped on the interstate south of U.S. 40 near Blue Springs, according to the patrol’s crash report.
The bus struck the rear of the Ford, causing a chain-reaction crash involving two other vehicles.
A 16-year-old girl on the bus suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, according to the patrol. A 15-year-old boy, two 16-year-old boys, a 14-year-old boy, and a 17-year-old boy suffered minor injuries and were taken to Children’s Mercy.
Three adults suffered minor injuries and were taken to Truman Medical Center, the patrol said.
The Center school district varsity and junior varsity wrestling team was heading to a match in Odessa when the crash occurred, said Christina Medina, a spokesperson for the school district. Five students and two staff members were among those sent to a hospital.
The students and staff were reporting minor aches and pains, Medina said. There were no critical injuries reported.
Students who were not taken to a hospital were taken back to Center High School and picked up by parents.
