Man in standoff with police takes his life after nearly 24-hour standoff with police

Just before 1 p.m. yesterday officers were dispatched to 86th and Hillcrest, at a Days Inn and Suites hotel, on a reported disturbance of a person who had overstayed the checkout time.

Nearly 24 hours later, after officers on scene requested tactical resources and negotiators to respond in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation, the man took his life.

Tactical officers and negotiators heard a gunshot from inside the hotel room, and at 12:40 p.m. Friday EMS pronounced the individual deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“KCPD strives to resolve any standoff peacefully and we mourn any loss of life,” Kansas City police spokeswoman Doaa El-Ashkar said in a written statement.
