Off-duty police officer fires shots at intruder inside his Kansas City home

An off-duty police officer checking out a noise in his home early Monday found someone inside the house and fired multiple shots at the intruder, police said.

The officer then fled from his home and used his police radio to call for help, according to Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

It is unknown whether the alleged intruder was hit by gunfire, Becchina said in an email. Police were investigating the incident as an officer-involved shooting.

Police responded to the call for help about 2:30 a.m. at the officer’s home in the 3500 block of St. John Avenue in Kansas City’s Northeast area.

The off-duty officer told police that he was home alone when he heard sounds from someone else. The officer went downstairs and found a man inside his home, Becchina said.

The officer told police that he feared for his safety and fired multiple shots at the suspected burglar, Becchina said.

Police secured the area and searched the surrounding blocks but were not able to find the intruder. Police were also checking hospitals to see if anyone showed up with a gunshot wound. No one, however, has been found.
