Police shoot and kill man at Kansas City home while investigating disturbance

A police officer investigating a disturbance between two vehicles on the road shot and killed a man Tuesday at a Kansas City home.

The incident began about 12:20 p.m. near 35th Street and College Avenue, where a disturbance between two vehicles was reported, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

A police helicopter tracked one of the vehicles as it pulled behind a home in the 4100 block of College, according to Capt. Tim Hernandez, a police spokesman.

Two detectives in plain clothes and police vests went around to the rear of the home to investigate, Hernandez said. A detective approached a man inside a vehicle, and during their interaction the detective shot the man.

Hernandez said “the officer was put in a position where he had to discharge his firearm.”

Police investigating the shooting found the man inside the vehicle with his left arm and head hanging out of the driver’s side window. On the ground near his left hand was a handgun, police said.

Police did not say how many shots were fired.

The scene was still being processed for evidence and the investigation was ongoing, Hernandez said in a written statement.
