Police look for teen charged in shooting that forced lockdown of Lee’s Summit schools

Police asked for the public’s help finding a teenager who allegedly shot his brother at their house Monday, forcing the lockdown of two Lee’s Summit schools.

Police said Tuesday that they are looking for 18-year-old Derrick C. Davis of Lee’s Summit. He has been charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with one count each of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. His bond has been set at $20,000.

Davis has remained at large since the shooting Monday morning in the 1700 block of Northeast Ridgeview Drive. The shooting forced nearby Underwood Elementary and Bernard Campbell Middle schools on Northeast Colbern Road into a brief lockdown as a precaution while police investigated.

According to court documents, the shooting happened after a fight between Davis and his brother.

The brother told police he was confronting Davis following an argument between their mother, Davis and Davis’ girlfriend. During the confrontation, the two began throwing punches, court records said.

The brother said he then left the home in his mother’s vehicle.

A short time later, the brother returned home. While the brother was still seated in the vehicle, Davis allegedly exited the home with a gun and started shooting at him, court records said. The brother drove off a short distance, stopped the vehicle and ran away.

Court records said he suffered at least two gunshot wounds to his left thigh. He was treated at a hospital and released.

A witness described hearing 4 to 5 rapid-fire gunshots and then seeing a young man running between houses across the street. After the shooting, the witness saw the young man emerge from the front door of a house across the street, check his cellphone and walk back in.

Police for several hours blocked off the streets surrounding the house where the shooting occurred. They eventually obtained a search warrant and entered the house.

They completed their search about 3:45 p.m. Monday without finding Davis inside.

Anyone with information about Davis’ whereabouts is asked to call the Lee’s Summit Police Department at 816-969-1752.
