Kansas City police are investigating a Wednesday night, May 16, 2018, homicide where witnesses say a man leaving Genesis Health Club was shot and later died on the sidewalk. Officers were called to the area of 87th and Ward Parkway at 9:45 p.m.

Someone clearly wanted her son dead — ambushing him as he left a gym, chasing him across the Ward Parkway Shopping Center Parking lot, terrifying witnesses who heard dozens of gunshots.

The mother of Darrell Allen told The Star Thursday she is overwhelmed by the accounts of her 25-year-old son's killing and could only issue this plea:

"I want somebody to find the killer," she said in a telephone interview. "Tell people to help the police find the killer of my son."

Witnesses on social media who were at the shopping center in the 8600 block of Ward Parkway when the gunfire erupted about 9:45 p.m. described what Ward Parkway officials and the police have called a targeted killing.

The shooter was waiting for Allen when he left the gym and Allen apparently tried to flee. Witnesses reported hearing some 20 to 30 shots.

"There was a trail of blood and bullets (and) shells from the gym on down to where (the victim) collapsed," one woman who worked at one of the neighboring stores posted on Facebook. "Seemed like an intentional shooting for sure."

Officers found Allen lying on a sidewalk and he was soon pronounced dead, police said.

The Ward Parkway Shopping Center posted a notice to its website: "We are shocked and saddened by the incident/shooting that occurred at the Ward Parkway Shopping Center on Wednesday evening resulting in a tragic death. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim. KCMO Police believe this was an act targeted at this particular individual. All stores and restaurants remain open."

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 (TIPS).
