Two women were arrested and charged Thursday with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a man whose body was found in a burned house south of Lawrence, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

The body of Joel Wales, a 34-year-old Eudora man, was found after the Nov. 3 fire in the 1100 block of East 1200 Road.

The Sheriff’s Office did not release the cause of death for Wales.

The suspects are 38-year-old Tria L. Evans of Lawrence and 37-year-old Christina L. Towell of Leavenworth. They are also charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, arson and aggravated battery.

The women are being held in the Douglas County Jail on $1 million bond. They are scheduled to have their first appearance in court on Friday.
