Lee’s Summit has one of the country’s top parks departments, national group says
Lee’s Summit has one of the best parks and recreation departments in the country, according to a national group.
The Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation department was named as one of four 2026 finalists for the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration’s National Gold Medal Award. It recognizes excellence in park and recreation management, in a class which includes communities with populations between 75,001 and 150,000. The award is handed out in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association, and one agency will be named as the top department in a handful of classes later this year at NRPA’s annual conference.
“Earning a place among the finalists reflects LSPR’s continued investment in high-quality parks, trails, and recreational opportunities,” the Lee’s Summit department said in a news release. “The department’s approach emphasizes strategic planning, strong community partnerships, and the expansion of access to ensure all residents can benefit from its programs and facilities.”
Joe Snook, the department’s administrator, said in the release: “It is an honor to be selected as a finalist for the Gold Medal. This recognition places LSPR among the best in the nation and reflects our commitment to excellence, our impact on the community, and the meaningful moments we create in people’s lives every day.
“This recognition is a celebration for LSPR, our staff and board, elected officials, and, most importantly, our community,” he said.
Last year, the Johnson County Park and Recreation District won top honors in its class, for communities with populations more than 400,000 residents.
