KC area 5th grader dies after car crash on the way to soccer tournament
A fifth grader at a Prairie Village school died after a July 15 car crash, the school announced.
Annie Koester, a student at St. Ann Catholic School, died Saturday evening, according to a social media post from the school. The girl had been on life support after she was critically injured in a Wednesday crash, the school shared.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has kept Annie and the Koester family in your prayers,” the school’s post reads.
The family was driving to a Nashville soccer tournament, according to a GoFundMe for the Koester family.
In less than 24 hours, the fundraiser received more than $26,000. Alec Bethurum, the organizer of the fundraiser, wrote,
“The Koesters represent the very best of us. They are an amazing family who would do anything for their friends, neighbors, and community.”
The Prairie Village church will devote the 5 p.m. Sunday mass to “pray for the repose of Annie’s soul and for God’s comfort and peace to surround her family,” according to the post.
St. Ann Catholic Church did not immediately respond to a request for a statement and more information about the circumstances of the crash.
Kansas City Legends Soccer Club, where Koester played as #8, shared the fundraiser link.
“The Koesters have been a valued part of our club for many years and have consistently supported those around them, both on and off the field,” the club wrote.
“Now, we have the opportunity to support them during this difficult time.”
