When, where and how to vote in Johnson County

Johnson Countians will face a particularly robust ballot in the Nov. 4 general election.

Contested races for U.S. Senate, Congress and Kansas governor, secretary of state, insurance commissioner, treasurer and attorney general are of statewide and national import.

And in Johnson County, all 25 seats in the Kansas House are up for election, and all but the 28th District are contested. Every voter will choose a county commission chairperson and those in two districts, the 1st and the 4th, will pick a commissioner. Judges are up for retention, the Kansas education board has a contested seat in the county, three cities have sales tax questions — it’s a full ballot.

Here is a guide to the local contested races. You’ll find information on races for Kansas House districts 8-25 here and districts 26-121 here. In two races — the 49th and 121st Kansas House districts — the Democratic challenger did not participate in The Star’s voter guide.

So much to choose, so many ways to vote:

First, by mail: Ballots will be mailed beginning today. To vote by mail, complete an application and fax to 913-791-8931, 913-791-8932 or 913-791-8933 or mail it to Johnson County Election Office, 2101 E. Kansas City Road, Olathe, KS 66061. Applications are available online at jocoelection.org and at the election office and libraries. The application must be received at the election office before 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.

Next, in person in advance: In-person advance voting begins Monday, Oct. 20 at four locations.

At the Johnson County Election Office, 2101 E. Kansas City Road in Olathe, hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday until Oct. 31 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1; and 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 3.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday until Oct. 31, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 at the following locations:

▪ Great Mall of the Great Plains, 20345 West 151st St., Olathe;

▪ Johnson County Northeast Offices, 6000 Lamar, Mission;

▪ Penton Media building, 9800 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

Those locations are closed Nov. 3.

On Election Day: Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov 4.

Also: you must present a government-issued photo ID each time you vote in Kansas. Valid ID includes your driver’s license, non-driver ID card, U.S. passport or Kansas college ID.
