Man clocked driving 105 mph in KC-area chase had box cutter and bag of donuts

An Independence man is being held with $200,000 bond after he was accused of driving up to 105 mph in a police chase and swinging a box cutter and bag of mini-donuts at officers.

Scott K. Adkins, 59, of Independence, was charged with second-degree assault on law enforcement, armed criminal action and aggravated fleeing law enforcement. The charges come after an early morning car chase on Sunday in Kansas City’s Northland, according to a probable cause statement filed in Clay County court Sunday.

Just before 4 a.m. at Interstate 435 near Shoal Creek Parkway, a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw a Hyundai driven by Adkins going almost 80 mph, court records stated.

The deputy attempted to pull over Adkins, but he did not yield and kept speeding. The statement states, “At that time, a vehicle pursuit was initiated.”

Wrong way on Skyview Avenue

At various times during the police chase, Adkins drove as fast as 105 mph in a 65 mph zone and went the wrong way on Northwest Skyview Avenue, the affidavit states. At one point the car ran off the road and returned to I- 435, the document recorded.

Adkins was stopped near I-435 and U.S. 69 when a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper conducted a tactical vehicle intervention.

Once stopped, Adkins did not follow law enforcement directions, according to court documents. He did not exit his car and was searching around “in a manic style,” the document stated.

Officers with Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri Highway Patrol broke the driver’s window to remove Adkins from the car.

Details of arrest

According to the probable cause statement, a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy “was attempting to clear the remaining glass from the shattered window, Adkins swung a bag of Hostess Donnette’s, followed by a yellow box-cutting knife, with the blade extended, toward Dep. Teale.”

Adkins then began stabbing himself with the box cutter and drifting in and out of consciousness, the affidavit states.

An officer tased Adkins. He was taken to Liberty Hospital for treatment and then booked at the Clay County Detention Center, court records state.

Adkins was still held with a $200,000 bond as of Monday afternoon.

No officers or witnesses were injured.
