Woman fatally shoots man who allegedly forced his way into KC home

A woman told police that she fatally shot a man late Wednesday after he kicked in her front door and came after her.

Officers responded to a report of a disturbance shortly after 11 p.m. in the 3700 block of 56th Street. While en route, the call was upgraded to a shooting.

Arriving officers found a man on the front porch of a house with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.

The woman and the man knew each other, police said. He had been inside the woman’s home earlier Wednesday but was asked to leave because he allegedly had drugs, police said.

The man left the house but returned. The resident told police she heard a loud banging and knocking on her front door. She told police she couldn’t see who it was and got her firearm.

The woman told police the man kicked in the front door. The woman, who appeared not to recognize him, became frightened and fired several shots, fatally wounding the man, police said.

Investigators have interviewed the woman, who is in her late 40s. She was released pending further investigation.

Police have not released the man’s name but said he was in his early 30s.

The man’s death is the city’s 26th homicide of the year and the 45th in the metropolitan area.
