Police arrest masked man on the roof of Eastgate Middle School

Police subdued an unarmed masked man on the roof of Eastgate Middle School in Kansas City with a stun gun and took him into custody Monday.

Law enforcement officers from several agencies surrounded the school after the principal spotted the man on the roof at 4700 N.E. Parvin Road about 10:30 a.m.

The school went on lockdown, said Michelle Cronk, a spokeswoman for North Kansas City Schools.

Police used a fire truck’s aerial ladder to get to the roof and arrest the man, who was described as a Kansas City resident in his 30s. He was not wearing a shirt but may have been using a shirt as his mask, said Capt. Matt Hunter with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Cronk said the district had no idea why the man was on the roof or how he got onto it. Hunter said it is possible he climbed a utility pole. He was not affiliated with the school.

Law enforcement officers found damage to the school’s rooftop air conditioners, Hunter said. Officers checked the building and its grounds but found nothing out of the ordinary.

The man was expected to undergo a mental health evaluation Monday. He could face trespassing and other charges, Hunter said.

The district sent buses to transfer Eastgate students to Winnetonka High School at 5815 N.E. 48th St., where parents could pick up their children. Students who weren’t picked up were fed lunch and taken home by bus at their regular time. Classes were canceled at Eastgate.
