Researchers at the University of Kansas plan to study links between violent aggression and substance abuse, the researchers said in a prepared statement from KU on Thursday. They said linking aggression to drugs and alcohol abuse is a kind of research that doesn’t happen enough.
Experts often study aggression and substance abuse as separate conditions, KU researchers said in a prepared statement. They say that the two problems are often taken up differently by neurobiologists and psychologists.
So KU researchers are establishing the
Consortium for Translational Research on Aggression and Drug Abuse and Dependenceto study the links, and bring together experts from several disciplines.
The work will be paid for over three years with money from the KU Strategic Initiative Grant.
Violent aggression accounts for 60 percent of the 1.5 million violent crimes committed each year in the United States, the KU statement said.
