Apartment complex is punished in disability case

The owners of a Kansas City apartment complex have been ordered to pay $20,000 by the federal government for violating the Fair Housing Act.

The Brentwood Manor Apartments and its management entities refused to allow a disabled tenant to have a live-in caretaker, the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs announced Wednesday.

The apartment must pay the tenant $20,000 for refusing to waive a policy requiring that she live in her apartment for six months before adding someone else to the lease.

The government said the woman was forced to move out of state because of the refusal.

The apartment owner and managers also must implement a reasonable accommodation policy and provide fair housing training for employees.
