Police union speaks out against shooting involving KCPD motorcycle officer
Kansas City’s police union showed support for a motorcycle officer who was involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon, condemning the act of violence and saying it was not tied to the World Cup.
The Kansas City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 99 spoke out against the shooting in a social media post after the Missouri State Highway Patrol released preliminary information about the incident.
Around 1:40 p.m., a Kansas City police officer on a motorcycle was stopped at a stop sign near 27th Street and Jackson Avenue when witnesses saw a man armed with a rifle open fire, the highway patrol said.
The officer returned fire; neither the suspect nor the officer was injured. The suspect then fled into a wooded are nearby.
After officers established a perimeter, the suspect came out unarmed and was arrested.
A K9 unit was searching the woods for the suspect’s weapon Thursday afternoon.
“While this season has brought countless fist bumps, thank-yous, and hugs from the community, today is a reminder that the danger our officers face never goes away,” the police union said on Facebook. “Every shift carries uncertainty, and the threat level is never zero.”
The police union also said there was no indication that the shooting was related to ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 festivities downtown.
“We are incredibly grateful our officer is safe and proud of the courage, composure, and professionalism displayed by everyone who responded,” the union said.
“Please keep all of our officers in your thoughts as they continue valiantly protecting this city.”
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
