Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated in an appearance on Fox News Monday that Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, the man suspected in a series of shootings on Kansas City roadways, may be dead.

Kansas City police said Monday they were not aware that Sanchez-Munoz, who is accused of killing one man and injuring four others, had been found dead.

“It’s a big case, and law enforcement worked all weekend long, FBI working with the local law enforcement,” Blanche said in the Fox appearance. “We think we got him tracked to a house in Missouri. We’re still looking into whether he’s there and what condition he’s in. That’s an example of when law enforcement works together and the public helps as well.

“You saw he’s out there allegedly just shooting in multiple different places, and you have somebody dead, and so hopefully we got him,” he said.

After Fox & Friends host Lawrence Jones indicated that Sanchez-Munoz was deceased, Blanche responded, “That’s what we believe, but even that, we’re still looking to confirm that, and I expect later on this morning or today, we’ll have more information.”

Asked about Blanche’s report, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department said in an email Monday afternoon, “That information was not provided by the KCPD. I followed up with detectives this morning and they have not been notified that the subject has been located deceased. KCPD, along with additional local, state, and federal partners are continuing our search for the subject and are following all leads that we obtain.”

The Department of Justice and the FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday afternoon.

As recently as 9:18 a.m. Monday, the official FBI Most Wanted account on X, formerly known as Twitter, was promoting a wanted poster seeking information about Sanchez-Munoz.

The FBI announced on Thursday that it was offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information about the man and said its Kansas City field office was assisting in the search. The FBI said the man “should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Asked about Blanche’s comments, a spokesperson for Mayor Quinton Lucas’ office said, “We look forward to learning more from the Acting Attorney General and the Kansas City Police Department.”

Series of shootings

Sanchez-Munoz is accused in a series of shootings along a stretch of Kansas City roadways that included Interstate 670, Interstate 70 and Truman Road on Tuesday evening. Police said the shootings happened in quick succession. An Uber driver taking fans to Kansas City’s first World Cup match was injured, as was a woman who was exiting Interstate 70 on her way to pick up her brother.

Law enforcement also linked Sanchez-Munoz to a June 11 shooting in which a vehicle occupied by an adult and a child was hit by gunfire in the area of Seventh Street and Metropolitan Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.

After the highway shootings last week, police sought Sanchez-Munoz in a pair of standoffs — one in Kansas City and another in Independence — but did not find him.

In the Independence standoff in the 700 block of Brookside Avenue at what police believed to be Sanchez-Munoz’s primary residence, firefighters had to put out a blaze in the house, but the man was not located there. Police were led to a second location, a home near 16th Street and Kensington Avenue in Kansas City, but investigators did not locate the man their either after another standoff.
