Bugs in bottles, no running water: Latest Kansas City-area restaurant inspections

From a dog bowl with floating insects to unlabeled raw meat, health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City-area restaurants this month.

Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and grocery stores are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public.

In Kansas City and Independence, each city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better.

Most restaurants correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly after. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. They are available for Kansas City at inspectionsonline.us, and Johnson and Wyandotte counties at agriculture.ks.gov.

Here are the restaurants in Kansas City and Johnson County that received seven or more critical or priority and priority foundation violations from June 7 through June 13. No restaurants met the threshold in Independence or Wyandotte County during this time.

Los Corrals

  • 408 W. Ninth St.
  • Seven critical violations, as well as four non-critical violations, were found during a June 9 inspection

Grease buildup was on the hood vents of this Mexican restaurant. Food items were stored on the floor in the main walk-in cooler and basement walk-in cooler. Buildup was found inside the ice machine.

Some violations were corrected on site, including no sanitizer buckets being made for the kitchen line. Multiple food items were seen without date markings in the walk-in cooler. The person in charge then properly marked the food items. Other food items were also held past their seven-day date marking, which were then disposed of.

Three violations must be fixed by September. Read the full report for Los Corrals.

Wok n Roll

An employee who was handling food could not provide their food handler card at the Northland restaurant. According to Kansas City inspections, 80% of required food handler staff must have a three-year food handler card.

Damaged ceiling tiles were found; they must be replaced with tiles that are smooth, clean and durable. There were also damaged spots found on a wall near the back exit.

Multiple instances of buildup were found throughout the establishment, including the inside of a microwave, the ice machine and a hand sink. The microwave build up was corrected on site.
