Kansas City will now host two of the most iconic British rock musicians in history in mid-September.
First, Eric Clapton will play the T-Mobile Center on Sept. 17.
Two days later on Sept. 19, former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant will appear at the Kauffman Center, the performing arts center announced Tuesday.
Plant, forever a rock god of the ‘70s, will appear with his new rock-folk band Saving Grace and singer Suzi Dian in Helzberg Hall.
Plant began playing with Saving Grace in 2019. They toured the United States for the first time last year with their new album — also called “Saving Grace” — which he called “a song book of the lost and found.”
In April, Plant and Saving Grace performed on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” among Colbert’s last musical guests before the show ended. They played Led Zeppelin’s 1969 hit, “Ramble On.”
Fans noted how the song features lyrics inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” Both Colbert and Plant are Tolkien fans.
Saving Grace’s members were drawn together by a shared love of roots music, blues, folk, gospel, country “and those tantalizing sounds that lay in between,” the Kauffman Center said in its announcement.
“Like Plant, they’re keen to explore how these genres are evolving as well as to discover where these repertoires originated — and how collectively they could reinvigorate the music they loved.”
Plant has called the band’s members “really sweet people. They’re playing all the stuff they could never get out before. They’ve become unique stylists and have created a new place for the old dog.”
Led Zeppelin dominated rock from 1968 to 1980, the year drummer John Bonham died tragically after a drinking binge and the group disbanded.
The band was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in 2012 in front of an A-list crowd that included President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
That night Bonham’s son, British drummer Jason Bonham, sat in on a performance of the band’s classic, “Stairway to Heaven,” featuring Heart. That performance has been viewed more than 200 million times on YouTube, to this day one of the most memorable Kennedy Center Honors tributes.
“From Led Zeppelin to Saving Grace, Robert Plant maintains musicality and innovation, never sitting still and never getting quiet,” .Kauffman Center president and CEO Paul Schofer said in a statement.
“We can’t wait to hear Saving Graces’ blues, folk, gospel and country influences in the perfect acoustical place, Helzberg Hall.”
The concert begins at 8 p.m. Sept. 19. Guitarist/singer Rosie Flores, known as the “Rockabilly Filly,” will open.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, available through the Kauffman Center ticket office at 816-994-7222 or online at tickets.kauffmancenter.org.
