Law enforcement officials have not said whether the event was associated with the shooting, but Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas took to social media to blame the shooting on an unlicensed club.

“Another mass shooting at an after hours, unlicensed club. 4am Saturday. 9 people hit,” Lucas said. “To irresponsible owners and promoters, I know the dollars seem worth it, but are the lives changed and too often lost and the lawsuits of some value to you too?”

The party was promoted by Big Mama’s Playhouse as an event that was to be held after clubs and bars closed. The event flyer said the party was to start at midnight and would cost $5 for women and $10 for men to enter.

“If you ain’t ready to go home when the club close, I got somewhere for you to be!” said a post the by Nana Davis promoting the event.

An event promoter associated with the advertisements for the party did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
