In a probable cause statement dated Tuesday, a Kansas City police detective said the other man who was shot was still unconscious, intubated and had life-threatening injuries. Prosecutors said Thursday that the man was stable.

Askew Avenue and East 12th Street

Police were called to the shooting in an apartment near the intersection of Askew Avenue and East 12th Street around 6:45 p.m. Monday, and Arguijo-Mejia was taken into custody there.

Police found the two shooting victims suffering from gunshot wounds in an apartment. Antonio-Lazaro was found in the apartment’s entryway and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was found in a bedroom and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Investigators found a total of 13 shell casings in the apartment and found a 9 mm handgun with an empty magazine, as well as two spent bullets that had been shot into the kitchen of a neighboring apartment unit across the hall, police said.

A witness who lived across the hall from the men and worked with Arguijo-Mejia said he had heard the sounds of an argument and then four shots and then three more shots, police said.

When the witness looked outside, he said he saw Arguijo-Mejia holding a gun. Another witness said she had been in apartment across the hall from the shooting with her children and said she heard eight to nine shots and then saw Arguijo-Mejia with a gun when she opened the door
