Man dies 12 hours after mini bike collided with van in Northeast Kansas City
A man died Saturday, hours after the mini bike he was riding collided with a van in Kansas City’s Northeast, according to police.
The crash occurred Friday about 7:45 p.m. Friday at the intersection of St. John and White avenues in the Indian Mound area of Kansas City, according to a police report provided by Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
The victim was riding a mini bike, which is similar to a small dirt bike, without a helmet.
The mini bike operator was travelling west on St. John Avenue when it moved around another westbound vehicle making a left turn onto White Avenue, the police report said. At the same time, a white Chevrolet Express van on eastbound St. John Avenue was turning left onto White Avenue.
The mini bike collided with the van while the larger vehicle was turning, initial reports say. The mini bike driver was thrown off the vehicle. He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police reported the man was pronounced dead by hospital staff on Saturday at 8:10 a.m., 12 hours after the crash.
The police department had not yet released the victim’s name on Sunday. No one else was injured. Police are investigating the incident.
