KCK man suffered ‘medical event,’ died during altercation with deputies: Sheriff
A Kansas City, Kansas, man is dead after he suffered what investigators say they believe to be a “medical event” during an altercation with Buchanan County sheriff’s deputies on Thursday.
Deputies with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri were called to the area of U.S. 59 and U.S. 45 on a “check for trouble” call just before noon, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. On the way to the location, a dispatcher told deputies they heard a woman use the word “kidnapping,” and she said she was “in fear for her life.”
There, deputies found Marcus Alan Caldwell, 36, of Kansas City, Kansas, engaged in an “active disturbance” with a relative, the news release said.
Deputies said Caldwell appeared to be “highly agitated, and his behavior was very erratic.” They attempted to talk to Caldwell, “to calm him down and de-escalate the situation,” according to the release
As deputies attempted to handcuff Caldwell, he fought deputies, punching one in the face, the news release said. Caldwell grabbed a deputy’s gun during the altercation, and deputies eventually got Caldwell “on the ground, under control and handcuffed.”
Caldwell was assessed by deputies, who put water on his neck. After emergency medical services responded to the scene, Caldwell “appeared to suffer a medical event and stopped breathing,” the news release said.
Deputies and medical providers attempted life-saving measures, the news release said. Caldwell was transported to an area emergency room, where he was pronounced dead at 1:47 p.m.
An investigation into Caldwell’s death is ongoing, the news release said. An autopsy was set to be performed Friday.
