Residents concerned traffic at new Olathe QuikTrip may be ‘a pain.’ What officials say

A new QuikTrip is being built at S. Mur-Len Road and 135th Street in Olathe, and the announcement of the project has sparked some concerns about traffic in the area.

Last June, at a planning commission meeting, commissioner Keith Brown raised concerns about a U-Turn on Mur-Len that leads into the shopping center.

Plans for the project also show that the two right-turn access points on 135th will be removed and turned into one access point into the gas station lot.

Residents in an online Facebook group discussed their concerns about the location with one person writing, “I feel like to exit and enter that if it’s a QT will be a pain . . . ”

Another resident wrote, “their parking lots are the worst & it’s already a busy intersection.”

Olathe traffic studies

Olathe Chief Communications Officer Cody Kennedy said the project has gone through the necessary traffic studies and that the community should not be concerned about traffic in that area once the QuikTrip opens.

“This project has gone through our typical process of the client planning commission traffic studies,” Kennedy said. “Ensuring safety is a top priority of any project, but this zoning was already in place for a gas station or a bank, so this project has been approved by the city council, and the plat has been approved. All the traffic studies have been completed”

Kennedy said that the city can anticipate the QuikTrip opening next summer, but they are waiting for a resubmitted building permit to be approved to know the official opening date.

“They just resubmitted a building permit, so once that timeframe kind of gets established, I’d have a better idea of the end date,” Kennedy said. “So essentially they just reset the shot clock on their end.”

The new QuikTrip location is a part of a $26 million revitalization project in the shopping center. An indoor pickleball arena is also being built in the area and will accompany the Crunch Fitness that opened last year.

The new location will be less than a mile from another QuikTrip at 15650 W. 135th St.
