1 person dies, 4 hospitalized after SUV crashes into tree in Kansas City
One person died and four were hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash Wednesday night in Kansas City’s Lykins neighborhood, police said.
Officers responded just after 8 p.m. to the area of East 9th Street and Cleveland Ave on a reported crash. According to a crash log, the wreck happened as a black Cadillac Escalade sped east on 9th Street.
The Cadillac failed to turn at a curve in the road and traveled off the road. It struck a parked unoccupied Chrysler car and struck a tree before coming to rest.
The driver of the Cadillac was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Paramedics transported the front seat passenger of the Cadillac to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, according to the crash log.
Police have not yet publicly identified the person who died.
Three juvenile back seat passengers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Thursday, they were recovering after treatment, police said.
The crash marks Kansas City’s 30th traffic death this year, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesman. At this time last year, the city had recorded 24 traffic deaths.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
