A Kansas City-area family is planning a funeral for their toddler son who was hit Saturday by a vehicle backing out of an apartment complex parking space.

The incident occurred around 2:12 p.m. Saturday at Independence’s Hawthorne Place Apartments in the 800 block of Concord Circle. The 2-year-old boy — whose name is Aziel — was on a scooter when he “entered the path” of a 2017 Cadillac XT5, Independence police said.

The toddler was transported to a local hospital where he died.

A relative set up a GoFundMe account to help the family pay for services and other expenses. As of Monday afternoon, more than $1,100 had been donated.

“The funds raised will help put Aziel to rest and support my sister-in-law with funeral expenses, bills, and caring for her other children during this incredibly difficult time,” the fundraiser said. “With no life insurance to help with these unexpected costs, every bit of support will make a difference and help ease some of the burden she is facing.

“Anything helps, and our family truly appreciates every donation, prayer, and kind word. Thank you for being here for us.”

The crash is still under investigation.
