  • Taylor Swift hugged a young fan backstage at the iHeartRadio Music Awards.
  • Some online users compared Swift to Chappell Roan amid lingering Brazil fan drama.
  • Some social posts linked Swift’s hug to the ongoing Roan controversy.

Chappell Roan wasn’t even at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Thursday, but that didn’t stop some people from talking about her on social media — making it clear that the drama in Brazil concerning a young fan hasn’t died down.

What triggered the comments? A video of Taylor Swift hugging a little girl backstage at the awards. It was a tender moment, not unlike others we’ve seen of the Eras Tour singer being affectionate with children.

But people still angry with Roan rushed to social media to (unfairly?) compare the two stars.

Critics blamed the Missouri-born singer after a security guard — presumed at first to be in her employ — allegedly spoke aggressively to 11-year-old Ada Law after she walked past Roan’s table and glanced at the singer during breakfast in a Sao Paulo hotel.

Ada is the daughter of British actor Jude Law.

Roan told fans, via Instagram, that she didn’t even know the incident had happened and that the security guard did not work for her.

On Wednesday, the security guard, Pascal Duvier, issued a statement saying he was not part of Roan’s security detail.

“My sole interaction with the mother was calm and with good intentions, and the outcome of the encounter is regretful,” he wrote.

Roan addressed the incident in an Instagram Story and criticized the security guard.

“It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because there’s no action even taken,” she said. “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. Like, that is crazy.”

The backlash on social media has been strong and divided, with fans saying she’s being treated unfairly and others calling for her to be “canceled.”
