Chappell Roan’s Paris run-in sparks reaction from influencers, Boy George
It’s been an eventful couple of weeks for Missouri-born singer Chappell Roan, who played two memorable outdoor concerts in Kansas City last October.
Roan’s no good, very bad week, so to speak, involved an alleged confrontation between a security guard and young fan in Brazil. She has since responded.
That incident in Brazil came on the heels of another highly publicized run-in she had with a group of photographers and fans outside a restaurant in Paris while she was there attending Paris Fashion Week shows by Vivienne Westwood, Mugler, Alexander McQueen and others.
She took out a cell phone and began filming the small group, accusing them of harassing her, and refused one fan’s request for an autograph. Fans were conflicted about her behavior in front of a popular restaurant known for drawing a celebrity crowd.
Instagram personality and content creator Nicholas Piff Peterson wondered whether Roan needs “a reality check.”
“Look, I genuinely really like Chappell Roan — her music slaps, her style is fire, and she’s got real talent that stands out in a sea of copycats,” Peterson wrote. “But girl, you have GOT to stop pretending you’re still just some regular person who can politely ask paparazzi and fans to ‘leave you alone’ like that’s going to work.
“The second you became a massive celebrity, you lost the luxury of normal-person boundaries in public. That’s the trade-off: insane fame, money, adoration, sold-out shows, viral everything … but also zero privacy when you’re out in the wild.
“Chappell, I root for you hard, but you can’t have it both ways.”
Even Boy George chimed in this month with some celebrity-on-celebrity advice for the “Pink Pony Club” singer.
“It’s probably not helpful but I have been doing this fame thing for a while and you learn slowly and painfully that you don’t get a free pass once you turn yourself into a bird of paradise,” the Culture Club icon wrote in a social media post.
“I watched @ChappellRoan filming the paps in Paris and I laughed because I have kicked off at them many times.
“Yes, it’s annoying at times but so is being ignored and told (you’re) a ‘has-been.’ Life is always now and I think Chappell looks great but cheer up girl. The world is at your feet stop kicking it! It takes so much more time to say no to a picture or a signature. Boundaries are boring. Break them with the magic of kindness!”
