Scooter rider killed in fatal hit-and-run crash on MLK Jr. Boulevard: Police

A fatal hit-and-run crash in Kansas City killed one person who was riding a scooter on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Saturday morning.

Officers responded around 2:25 a.m. to the intersection of MLK Jr. Boulevard and Eastwood Trafficway on a reported hit-and-run collision.

A preliminary investigation indicates the crash happened when a black TAO Motors scooter traveled southeast on MLK Jr. Boulevard and made a left turn onto Eastwood Trafficway at a green traffic control signal.

At the same time, a dark-colored unknown vehicle drove northwest on MLK Jr. Boulevard and failed to stop for a red light, according to a Kansas City Police Department crash log.

The unknown vehicle entered the intersection and struck the scooter, ejecting the rider completely off the scooter, the crash log said.

According to police, the vehicle left the scene of the collision without stopping.

Paramedics pronounced the scooter driver dead at the scene.

Police have not yet publicly identified the person who died.

The crash is Kansas City’s 15th traffic fatality this year, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesman. At this time last year, the city had recorded 11 traffic deaths.

An investigation into the hit-and-run is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
