Pedestrian killed in I-35 crash in Claycomo; highway shut down for hours
A 40-year-old Bates City, Missouri, man died Thursday night after being struck by a car as he was walking on northbound Interstate 35 in Claycomo in Clay County, according to a preliminary crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at about 8:25 p.m. near the interchange of northbound I-35 and Interstate 435, temporarily shutting down the highway for a couple of hours while the highway patrol investigated.
According to the crash report, a 21-year-old Kansas City woman was driving north on I-35 in a 2014 Kia Optima when the man entered the roadway. The car struck the pedestrian. A member of the Pleasant Valley Fire Department pronounced the pedestrian dead shortly thereafter.
The car’s driver sustained minor injuries, but refused treatment. Her car was totaled in the crash, according to the crash report.
While the crash was being investigated, the highway patrol posted on X, formerly Twitter, that northbound I-35 was shut down to traffic. Drivers were asked to avoid the area, as it was unknown how long the highway would be closed. Drivers were encouraged to use U.S. 69 or I-435.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said on X that the highway reopened around 10:30 p.m.
