Kansas City launches probe into nightclub after shooting that killed two women
In response to the deadly Kansas City shooting early Sunday inside Status Nightclub, where two women were killed, the city has launched an investigation into the business.
The city’s Multidisciplinary Task Force and Regulated Industries Division are each investigating Status Nightclub and Blvd Nights, said Sherae Honeycutt, a Kansas City spokesperson. Blvd Nights is located on the same block as Status.
“If, following a thorough investigation, a business is found to be in violation of City ordinances, its City‑issued operational licenses may be suspended or revoked,” Honeycutt said in an emailed statement. “Business owners have the right to participate in an appeals process if they disagree with the determination.”
It is not clear exactly what actions or operations are being investigated.
Eboni Silas, 29, and Tishauna Ballard, 24, were killed in the shooting inside the nightclub at 2801 Southwest Blvd. around 2 a.m. Sunday. Two others were injured in the early Sunday shooting, including a man who was shot in the face and chest and is hospitalized in stable condition, authorities said Tuesday.
Witnesses told The Star that the business was packed, with people nearly shoulder-to-shoulder, when gunshots rang out.
Prosecutors filed several charges against Dontae M. Brooks on Tuesday. In addition to the two second-degree murder charges, he faces four counts of armed criminal action, one count of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and two weapons crimes.
Surveillance cameras inside the nightclub helped lead prosecutors to the charges, according to court records.
The footage shows a man wearing a red baseball cap with a capital “A” on the front entering the Status Nightclub at 1:51 a.m. Sunday. It also shows an unknown male whisper into the suspect’s ear, a court affidavit explaining the charges said.
“Shortly after this, the suspect raises his right arm with a handgun in his hand and points it towards the area where a heavyset black male in a white t-shirt is dancing,” the document said. “Apparent muzzle flash is seen coming from the handgun.”
Many inside the club began to run as others drop to the ground, witnesses told The Star. And according to court records, the suspect also began to flee, but he fell down.
At that time, records show, his cap fell off.
“The suspect then stands up and exits the club, leaving his baseball cap behind,” it said. Police at the scene recovered the cap.
According to a release from the prosecutor’s office: “DNA evidence from the cap matched the defendant.”
Officer Alayna Gonzalez, of the Kansas City Police Department, said since March 2024 there have been 11 calls to service to 2801 Southwest Blvd. where Status Nightclub is located. Those calls ranged from suspected suspicious activity and a disturbance to an overdose.
Since 2021, Kansas City’s 311 office has received six reports related to this same location. Most of those are unrelated to the business itself, though a food safety concern and noise complaint were included, Honeycutt said in her statement.
As the city’s investigation continues, “information will be shared as it becomes available,” she said.
“Kansas City remains committed to protecting public safety, holding businesses accountable to established regulations,” Honeycutt said. “And ensuring that nightlife venues operate in a manner that prioritizes the well-being of residents and visitors alike.”
