See where Chiefs want to build new stadium in KCK & practice facility in Olathe

Local government leadership in Johnson and Wyandotte counties recently unveiled where team and state officials want to build components of a $4 billion stadium package that would mark the Kansas City Chiefs’ crossover into Kansas.

On Tuesday, residents from Kansas City, Kansas, and Olathe will have a chance to tell their respective governing bodies what they think about the Chiefs moving into their backyards and how much they want to pitch in to help finance the team’s proposed move.

Team, state and local officials announced in December that the Chiefs would be leaving their longtime home at Arrowhead Stadium for a new domed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.

The package, approved by the state’s Legislative Coordinating Council, includes a $3 billion stadium in KCK and a new nearly $1 billion training facility and team headquarters in Olathe. The facilities will be surrounded by entertainment districts, Gov. Laura Kelly said during their announcement in Topeka.

The bulk of the Chiefs’ move would be paid for using $2.8 billion in sales tax and revenue bonds, or STAR bonds issued by the state to cover up front costs. Then, incremental state sales taxes from a sweeping district across Wyandotte and Johnson counties would pay back the bonds over 30 years.

Kansas officials asked Wyandotte County and the city of Olathe to contribute a portion of their local sales taxes to pay for the stadium, too.

The Chiefs’ proposed stadium site in KCK

In Wyandotte County, decision-makers are eyeing far-west KCK, just northwest of the Kansas Speedway, for the future stadium. The Unified Government Board of Commissioners will vote Thursday on whether they divert local sales tax revenues generated around the project, and nearby, toward paying off the bond debt used to pay for the stadium and accompanying facilities.

According to the Unified Government’s maps, the stadium would be located somewhere north of State Avenue and between 126th and 118th Streets. That land is west of the American Royal and Plaza at the Speedway districts and spans 236 acres.
