These airlines say you can rebook KCI flights for free due to the winter storm

Ahead of winter storm warnings for the Kansas City metro area, surrounding counties and eastern parts of the United States, airlines are canceling flights and encouraging others to delay travel plans for safety concerns.

Heavy snow is expected from what some are calling Winter Storm Fern. The National Weather Service issued a warning Thursday afternoon, saying between 5 and 7 inches of snow could fall in the KC metro area.

The warning includes the following counties in Kansas: Atchison, Miami, Linn, Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson. In Missouri, it covers Platte, Clay, Ray, Carroll, Jackson, Lafayette, Saline, Howard, Cass, Johnson, Pettis, Cooper, Bates and Henry counties.

“Travel could be very difficult,” the weather service said. “If you must travel, keep extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Flight rebooking options from KCI

Airlines have given travelers the option to rebook their flights for free because of the impending winter storm, including some flying out of Kansas City International Airport.

Delta Airlines said in a statement that customers with existing bookings can change their travel with no fees on flights scheduled between Thursday, Jan. 22, and Wednesday, Jan. 28. If a traveler can’t reschedule within the dates, they can cancel and apply any unused value of the ticket toward a new ticket for a period of one year after the original ticket was purchased.

The safety of Delta customers and our people remains first and foremost as we closely monitor forecasts to determine necessary schedule adjustments,” the airline said.

Southwest Airlines is also one of the airlines offering travelers from Kansas City the option to rebook without fees within 14 days of their original travel date. If the flight is canceled or significantly delayed and you choose to cancel the flight, travelers may be eligible for a refund for the unused ticket and any optional travel charges they paid for, according to Southwest.

American Airlines and United Airlines offer similar fee waivers, but not currently for travelers impacted at Kansas City International Airport. You might be eligible if your destination or layover airtport is on those airlines’ lists, though.
