Winter storm warning for Kansas City: Just how much snow is on the way?

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Kansas City metro area and surrounding counties as a major system threatens to bring several inches of snow.

Heavy snow is expected from the storm. The National Weather Service issued a warning Thursday afternoon, saying between 5 and 7 inches of snow could fall in the metro area.

The warning includes the following counties in Kansas: Atchison, Miami, Linn, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, and Johnson. In Missouri, it covers Platte, Clay, Ray, Carroll, Jackson, Lafayette, Saline, Howard, Cass, Johnson, Pettis, Cooper, Bates, and Henry counties.

“Travel could be very difficult,” the weather service said. “If you must travel, keep extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”

The cities included in the warning are Carrollton, Sedalia, Riverside, Liberty, Rich Hill, La Cygne, Platte City, Fort Leavenworth, Kearney, Marshall, Lansing, Belton, Pleasant Hill, Richmond, Kansas City, Kansas, Butler, Lawson, Adrian, Atchison, Boonville, Shawnee, Parkville, Gladstone, Glasgow, New Franklin, Concordia, Olathe, Harrisonville, Stanley, Weston, Lexington, Fayette, Clinton, Mound City, Pleasanton, Warrensburg, Kansas City, Independence, Paola, Windsor, Odessa, Leavenworth, Higginsville, Overland Park, Lenexa, Louisburg, Weatherby Lake, Osawatomie, Excelsior Springs, and Raymore.

Meanwhile, a separate winter storm warning has been issued for Doniphan, Buchanan, Clinton, Caldwell, Livingston, and Chariton counties north of the metro, where 4 to 6 inches of snow is possible.

Cities included in that warning are Polo, Wathena, Keytesville, Chillicothe, Brunswick, Braymer, Plattsburg, Breckenridge, Highland, Lathrop, Cameron, Hamilton, Salisbury, Elwood, St. Joseph, and Troy.
