A Kansas City, Kansas, church sustained damage after an explosion over the weekend believed to have been caused by vandalism.

Officers were called around 10:24 a.m. Sunday to Iglesia Cristiana Bethel Church of God at 4832 Oak Grove Rd. after a report of criminal damage to the building, according to Nancy Chartrand, spokesperson for the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department.

Police believe someone placed an illegal, homemade firework in a windowsill on the church’s building, according to Chartrand.

The firework damaged the window frame, interior wall, exterior wall and some items inside the church.

Both KCKPD and the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department are investigating the incident. No one was in the building at the time of the explosion, and no injuries were reported.
