This love story began on the pitch at CPKC Stadium in March, when Olympic wrestler Roman Bravo-Young got down on one knee after a game and proposed to KC Current defender Ellie Wheeler, his girlfriend.

The team won that day. So did Roman.

Ellie said yes.

On Saturday the two athletes got married in front of family and friends at a historic event space in Roman’s hometown of Tuscon, Arizona.

The bridesmaids wore gowns of light blue — not teal like the Current’s uniforms. Mariachi musicians played, an homage to Roman’s Mexican-American roots.

The bride and groom shared a video for their social media followers, who also got to see over the summer where Ellie bought her wedding gown.

Wheeler, from Fairfax Station, Virginia, joined the team in January 2024 as the No. 18 overall pick in the NWSL draft. After a strong rookie season she signed a four-year contract extension that keeps her in Kansas City through the 2028 season.

Roman, an elite freestyle wrestler, is a two-time NCAA Division I champ at Penn State and represented Mexico at the Summer Olympics in Paris last year.

He is currently training for the next World Championships with a goal of qualifying for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Earlier this month, just two weeks before the wedding, he opened the Roman Bravo-Young Wrestling Club on the south side of Tucson to train a new generation of athletes.

The bridesmaids all appeared to be soccer players. Some were Wheeler’s former soccer teammates from Penn State. Former Current player Hope Hisey was also a bridesmaid.

Elle Kershner, a forward with the Current’s developmental team who also plays in the WPSL, Women’s Premier Soccer League, was a maid of honor.

Over the last few days hundreds of KC Current fans have sent the couple best wishes on social media.

From what we’ve seen, the day was pitch perfect.
