Gunfire erupts in pickup basketball game at KC-area gym, 13 shell casings found
Detectives recovered 13 shell casings inside a Lee’s Summit gym where a shooting between two people during basketball open play injured one person Saturday, according to court documents.
One man was charged; a second suspect has not been charged.
Police were called around 6:15 p.m. to the TM Fieldhouse in the 1500 block of Southeast Hamblen Road on a report of an active shooter, according to Sgt. Chris Depue, spokesperson for the Lee’s Summit Police Department. When police arrived, they learned it was a shooting between two suspects.
Ricky Waller Jr., 30, of Kansas City, was charged over the weekend with the unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon/ exhibiting and armed criminal action, according to Depue. Waller was arrested after he transported himself to the hospital for injuries from the shooting.
According to the probable cause document, Waller was previously convicted of a felony weapon offense in Kansas in 2024 and is currently on parole.
A second suspect was identified and arrested, Depue said Sunday, but as of Monday afternoon he has not been charged. Jazzlyn Johnson, spokesperson for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office told The Star the investigation into his conduct is ongoing.
Detectives on the scene recovered eight .40 caliber casings and five 9mm casings from the gym and lobby and found several holes or impact points in the gym walls and gym floor, according to court documents.
In court documents, Waller told detectives he fired three to four shots from his pistol toward the exit of the gym before fleeing.
According to court documents, Waller got into an argument with the second suspect and produced a handgun from his sweatshirt as the second suspect was walking away. The second suspect then turned around and saw Waller’s weapon.
Waller then allegedly approached the man, they bumped into each other before Waller pointed his firearm, according to court documents. The other suspect then drew a firearm and allegedly fired multiple shots at Waller, who then returned fire as the other suspect ran toward the exit.
TM Fieldhouse was open and business was back to normal Monday morning, according to Lindsey Vleisides-Ray, director of operations at TM Fieldhouse. However, adult basketball open play has been suspended indefinitely.
“Seeing so much activity this morning reinforces that our community continues to feel safe and confident at TM Fieldhouse following this isolated incident,” Vleisides-Ray, said in an email Monday afternoon.
Fight on basketball court escalated to shooting
In a release from Depue Sunday, police said the venue was hosting an event inside the gym where two people began an argument that progressed to them shooting at each other in the crowded gymnasium, according to Depue.
Vleisides-Ray said there was no event in the gym and that the incident occurred during their Saturday open play for adults. There was a child’s birthday party going on in another area of the facility, according to Vleisides-Ray, but not in the gym.
“There was just about 25 to 30 men playing pickup basketball when the fight broke out between the two individuals,” Vleisides-Ray said. “At that point, everybody scattered.”
No other injuries were reported from the incident. Waller Jr. was in custody as of Sunday with his bond set at $200,000.
