Man shot, injured during fight at crowded Lee’s Summit gymnasium. Suspects arrested
A man was injured in a shooting Saturday that reportedly stemmed from a fight in a crowded gymnasium at a Lee’s Summit sports complex, according to police.
Police were called around 6:15 p.m. to the TM Fieldhouse in the 1500 block of Southeast Hamblen Road on a report of an active shooter, according to Sgt. Chris Depue, spokesperson for the Lee’s Summit Police Department.
Officers quickly determined it was actually a shooting between two suspects, not an active shooter incident.
The venue was hosting an event inside the gym where two people began an argument that progressed to them shooting at each other in the crowded gymnasium, according to Depue.
Lindsey Vleisides-Ray, Director of Operations at TM Fieldhouse, said there was no event in the gym and that the incident occurred during their Saturday open play for adults. Somewhere else in the facility was a child’s birthday party, according to Vleisides-Ray, but not in the gym.
“There was just about 25 to 30 men playing pickup basketball when the fight broke out between the two individuals,” Vleisides-Ray said. “At that point, everybody scattered, so it was not super crowded. “
The gym was naturally starting to clear out when the fight began and police responded quickly, Vleisides-Ray said. She said TM Fieldhouse has indefinitely suspended adult basketball open play.
One of the suspects, 30-year-old Ricky Waller Jr. of Kansas City, transported himself to a hospital and was arrested. He has been charged with the unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon/ exhibiting and armed criminal action, according to Depue.
Waller Jr. was in custody Sunday with his bond set at $200,000.
A second suspect has been identified and arrested, according to Depue. No other injuries were reported.
In a Facebook post Saturday, TM Fieldhouse confirmed the incident occurred and said all guests and staff are safe.
“The safety and well-being of our guests, participants, and staff remain our highest priority,” they said in the post.
TM Fieldhouse said they are complying with law enforcement.
